Alternatives

An AllTrails alternative, for runners specifically

Waypath is an alternative to Strava, Runkeeper, Nike Run Club, Komoot and AllTrails for runners and trail runners.

AllTrails is the biggest trail catalogue there is, and it is built for a hiker choosing a walk from other people's reviews. Runners use it for the same reason and then hit its edges: pace, splits, effort on the climbs, a way to be watched during a race. This page is about those edges and what Waypath does at them, without pretending AllTrails' review corpus is something a smaller app can match.

The catalogue

426,029 trails, built differently

Waypath's catalogue holds 426,029 waymarked trails across 37 countries, organised into 75 curated regions, from the Alps and the Pyrenees to the Rockies, the Appalachians, Patagonia and the Japanese Alps. It is rebuilt every month from OpenStreetMap and built from walking infrastructure only: paths, footways, tracks and bridleways, with no cycling or ski routes mixed in. Every trail carries distance, elevation, shape and difficulty, and each region says what the ground is like and the season it usually suits.

What it adds is dated condition reports from the people who were last there: dry, muddy, icy, overgrown, flooded or closed, with the date attached. “Icy above 1,800 m, reported two days ago” is a different kind of information from a star rating, and for a runner deciding whether to take the ridge on Saturday it is the one that matters.

What it does not have is AllTrails' review and photo corpus, which is enormous and is AllTrails' main asset. Waypath has comments and photographs on trails, on a far smaller scale. If picking a walk from five hundred reviews is the job, AllTrails does it better and this page says so.

For a runner

What happens after you pick the trail

Splits and grade-adjusted pace

Waypath explains what the terrain cost you: pace adjusted for gradient, so a slow climb and a fast descent read as the efforts they were. AllTrails records basic activity stats.

A pacer that reads the profile

Chase your best on this route or a race goal; the Ghost Runner holds your effort using the climbs ahead. On the wrist and the Lock Screen. Part of Premium.

Training load and predictions

Load, fitness and freshness, readiness from sleep and heart-rate variability against your own baselines, and race predictions that say when they are still the standard model.

A live link for the race

For an event, the organiser draws the course and spectators watch the field from a browser, free, with no app and no account. AllTrails offers live sharing to contacts on its paid Plus tier.

Draw a route that snaps to paths

Tap the map and each leg snaps to walkable paths; follow it with your planned line under your track and a warning if you drift.

Apple Watch with real heart rate

Standalone recording on the wrist, the Watch's measured heart rate and calories, and the pacer in Always-On.

Money

Free tiers and paid tiers

AllTrails' free tier lets you browse and record; AllTrails Plus, at $35.99 a year, adds offline maps, wrong-turn alerts and live activity sharing, and AllTrails Peak, at $79.99 a year, adds custom routes and more. Waypath's free tier includes recording, the whole trail catalogue, live sharing, one saved route and GPX export; Premium, at $29.99 a year, $4.99 a month or $59.99 once, adds the analysis layer, unlimited routes and the full heat map.

Both apps put something different behind the paywall. AllTrails charges for maps and safety features; Waypath charges for analysis and keeps sharing free. Which is the better deal depends on which of those you would actually use.

The other side

Where AllTrails is ahead

  • Reviews and photos. The corpus is the product, and it is large. Waypath's comments and photographs are on a far smaller scale.
  • Offline maps. AllTrails Plus downloads areas for offline use. Waypath has no downloadable region: it records anywhere by GPS, but a map tile it has not seen will not draw without a network. The reasons are on the offline page.
  • Platforms. AllTrails is on iPhone, Android and the web. Waypath is iPhone and Apple Watch, with Android planned for January 2027.
  • File import. Waypath imports from Apple Health, not from a GPX file you hand it. Not yet.
