Comparison

Waypath vs AllTrails

Waypath is an endurance training app carrying 426,029 waymarked trails: it records the effort, splits the climb, and gives an event a spectator link anyone can open in a browser. AllTrails is a trail discovery app with an enormous body of user reviews and photographs behind it. If your question is which path to walk on Sunday, those are not the same tool.

The short version

What each app is for

AllTrails exists to answer one question extremely well: which trail should I do, and what will it be like. Its strength is the review corpus, built up over many years, together with photographs, difficulty ratings and a paid tier that adds downloadable offline maps and off-route alerts. It runs on iPhone, Android and the web.

Waypath is a recording and training app first. It carries 426,029 waymarked trails from OpenStreetMap across 37 countries, with dated condition reports, but it is built around recording an activity, understanding what the terrain cost you, and letting people watch a course by link. It is iPhone and Apple Watch only.

AllTrails

Where AllTrails is stronger

Reviews and photographs

AllTrails' review volume is its moat and Waypath has nothing comparable. If you want to know what a trail is like from a hundred people who did it, that is where to look.

Downloadable offline maps

AllTrails' paid tier lets you download map areas for use with no signal. Waypath does not do this, and explains at length why it will not fake it on top of a cache it does not control.

Platform coverage

AllTrails runs on iPhone, Android and the web. Waypath is iPhone and Apple Watch today, with an Android version planned for January 2027 — a plan rather than a promise, so if you are on Android today AllTrails is the one that runs.

Navigation aids

AllTrails' paid tier includes wrong-turn alerts and its own live share link for contacts. Both are useful and both exist.

Curation for walkers

Difficulty ratings, suggested times and route descriptions are written for the hiking audience, and they are good at it.

Waypath

Where Waypath is different

Training analysis

Splits, climb, grade-adjusted pace from the published Minetti curve, race predictions with confidence, training load from a real heart-rate sensor. AllTrails is not trying to do this and Waypath is.

A spectator link for a course

An organiser draws a course, runners opt in individually, and anyone with the link watches the field in a browser. It is a spectator view, not timing.

OpenStreetMap underneath

426,029 waymarked trails across 37 countries and 75 curated regions, rebuilt from OpenStreetMap and licensed under the ODbL, with condition reports carrying the date they were left.

Apple Watch recording

With real heart rate, with or without the phone, and the exact sport survives the trip home.

56 sports

Trail running, skiing, paddling, climbing and the rest, each with its own treatment rather than one generic workout type.

Free to browse and record

The trail catalogue and unlimited recording are free. Premium adds the analysis layer.

Written on 12 August 2026 and correct to the best of our knowledge on that day. Competitor apps change often, and the fairest thing this page can do is tell you to check theirs. Waypath is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by any company named here, and all trademarks belong to their owners.

In practice

You can use both

These two sit together comfortably. Plenty of people plan a walk in AllTrails because of the reviews, then record it in Waypath because they want the splits, the climb and the fly-through afterwards.

If you mostly hike and mostly want to know which path to take, AllTrails is the better single app. If you are training, and the trail is where you train, Waypath is doing the other half of the job.

Try the one that keeps its promises small.

Waypath records unlimited activities for free, shares a live link at no cost, and publishes nothing until you say so.

Requires iPhone. There is no Android app today; one is planned for January 2027.
