Comparison

Waypath vs Komoot

Waypath is a recording and training app: it measures the effort, explains what the gradient cost you, and hands an event a spectator link anyone can open in a browser. Komoot is a route planning and navigation app, and a very good one. The overlap is real but the centre of each is somewhere else, and it shows the moment you try to use one for the other's job.

The short version

What each app is for

Komoot plans. You give it a start, an end and a sport, and it routes you over surfaces appropriate to that sport, tells you what those surfaces are, and then navigates you turn by turn with voice. It has genuine downloadable offline maps, community highlights along the way, and it runs on iPhone, Android and the web.

Waypath records. It measures what you did, explains what the gradient cost you, and holds it on your phone until you decide to share it. Its distinguishing feature is a live link that lets people watch a course in a browser, free and with no account at either end. Past workouts come in from Apple Health, whatever watch recorded them, and every activity exports as GPX. It is iPhone and Apple Watch today, with an Android version planned for January 2027.

Komoot

Where Komoot is stronger

Route planning

Komoot's planner is better than Waypath's, on purpose. Sport-specific routing, a surface and way-type breakdown for the route you drew, and a sensible answer when you ask for a loop of a given length.

Turn-by-turn navigation

Voice navigation that tells you where to turn. Waypath follows a route and paces you along it, but it is not a navigation app.

Real offline maps

Komoot lets you download regions and use them with no signal. Waypath does not, and says so rather than dressing up a cache it does not control.

Highlights

Community-contributed points along a route, which is a genuinely good way to find the viewpoint or the water fountain.

Platform coverage

iPhone, Android and the web, with a mature web planner. Waypath is iPhone and Apple Watch today, with an Android version planned for January 2027 — a plan rather than a promise, so if you are on Android today Komoot is the one that runs.

Waypath

Where Waypath is different

Training analysis

Grade-adjusted pace from the published Minetti curve, per-kilometre splits, race predictions with their own confidence, and training load from a real heart-rate sensor.

A spectator link for a course

An organiser draws a course, runners opt in individually, and anyone with the link watches in a browser with no app and no account. Komoot has live tracking to contacts you choose. This is a different shape: an event, a field, and a public link.

Clubs, events and challenges

A club calendar, a repeating weekly session and challenges whose leaderboards count themselves from members' activities.

Privacy defaults

Activities stay on the phone until you publish. Published routes have privacy zones removed and a random 200 to 600 metres trimmed from each end. Messages are end-to-end encrypted.

Trail conditions, dated

426,029 waymarked trails with reports saying dry, muddy, icy, flooded or closed, and the day somebody saw it that way.

Apple Watch

Standalone recording from the wrist with real heart rate.

In practice

You can use both

Plan in Komoot, record in Waypath is a reasonable workflow, and a common one among people who do both. Waypath takes your existing history across from Apple Health and exports every activity as GPX, so nothing you record is stuck here. The friction runs the other way: Waypath cannot yet read a GPX file, so a route planned elsewhere has to be redrawn rather than imported. That is a real limitation and it is on the roadmap.

If your problem is finding and following a route in unfamiliar terrain, Komoot solves it better. If your problem is understanding your training and letting people watch you race, that is this app.

Try the one that keeps its promises small.

Waypath records unlimited activities for free, shares a live link at no cost, and publishes nothing until you say so.

Requires iPhone. There is no Android app today; one is planned for January 2027.
